2019 Research Report
Message from Director of Research
Radiation Oncology
Princess Alexandra Hospital
Professor Sandro Porceddu
It has been an outstanding research year reflecting our ongoing commitment to delivering quality care through the integration of research into our clinical service. In 2019 the Princess Alexandra Hospital Radiation Oncology department received several prestigious awards in recognition of research excellence.
This included the Varian Prize at the Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists and the best oral and poster prize at the Engineering & Physical Sciences in Medicine Conference.
In collaboration with Professor Ian Frazer, former Australian of the Year and developer of the Gardisil Vaccine we were awarded the Outstanding Collaboration in Research & Development prize by the Business and Higher Education Research and Technology (BHART) Awards Committee.
Through our many collaborations we were involved in receiving close to $7 million in grant funding. Our national and global reach remained relatively high with 100 national and international presentations and 33 peer-reviewed publications.
The department continues to foster and supervise higher degrees with students completing Honours, Masters & PhD’s.
We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the generous support received from PA Research Foundation, Metro South Health Study Education and Research Trust and donors.
We would like to thank all of our research partners including, TRI, QFAB, University of Queensland and QUT.
We would also like to thank our patients who kindly volunteer to participate in our clinical trials.

Emerging technology trials have again dominated the Radiation Oncology Trials landscape in 2019, many combining with immunotherapy, thus offering patients access to otherwise unavailable treatments. Of the four new studies opened at CTU in 2019, 2 of these (NINJA, MASTERPLAN) are utilising Stereotactic (SBRT) technology, whilst 1 (OUTRUN) is combining SBRT and immunotherapy. Three studies closed to recruitment during the year, whilst one closed to follow up.
Over the course of the year, 174 potential patients were screened for trials, with 22 patients successfully recruited at the ROPART site and 31 at ROPAIR, yielding a recruitment rate of 31%. ROPART has again been hindered by trial selection due to the lack of required equipment for the emerging technology trials, but with the long overdue installation of new radiotherapy machines in the second half of 2020, we are looking forward to being able to offer these trials to all patients within the Metro South catchment area.
Towards the end of the year, it was with disappointment that ROPART’s long standing trials partnership with Mater Cancer Care Centre came to an end. However, this has led to an exciting opportunity to collaborate with our private sector colleagues, ICON Cancer Care. This new collaboration, whilst in its infancy, may see much-needed access to more industry trials.
One such trial is the C-POST study – the long-awaited follow-up trial to the POST Study which was conducted at both sites in years past. The C-POST study opened to recruitment in early 2020 at ROPAIR, and with the collaboration with ICON, it is hoped to open at ROPART in mid-2020. It is the first industry trial Radiation Oncology has conducted in many years.
The Cancer Trials Unit - Radiation Oncology Team has continued our proud record of the highest quality of trials conduct both on a national and international level – none of which would be possible without the contribution of staff from all disciplines and least of all from our patients. I am always humbled by the altruistic dedication of our patients who willingly and selflessly contribute to the evolution of cancer therapy.

Research in Focus
Radiotherapy technology in the treatment of movement disorders
Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) thalamotomy for tremor has been provided at the Gamma Knife Centre of Queensland, Princess Alexandra Hospital, since January 2018. SRS presents as an option for patients suffering from disabling tremor who are unfit for deep brain stimulation and refractory to medical treatment.
SRS Thalamotomy has been performed on ten patients. All patients have received a single fraction dose of 120Gy to 130Gy to the lateral portion of the ventral intermediate (VIM) nucleus of the thalamus. Patients are in various stages of follow-up through the Metro South Movement Disorders Service, monitoring for continued symptom remission, maximal response and side effects.
To date, the technique of delivering this treatment and the supporting patient case studies have been the subject of multiple presentations and posters to different audiences. This is anticipated to increase in the forthcoming years as the patient numbers and follow up data grow.
DurVax Trial in Head and Neck Cancer
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) mediated throat cancer is now the most common head and neck cancer in Queensland. In collaboration with Professor Frazer from the University of Queensland, Jingang Medicine (Australia), Astra Zeneca, Metro South Health and the TRI a world-first trial exploring the role of a newly developed therapeutic HPV-vaccine in combination with an immune checkpoint inhibitor are being tested in head and neck cancer patients.
This trial has now commenced accrual. This trial follows on from a recently completed first-in-human trial of the vaccine completed at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Clinical Research Facility.
Investigating brain low dose wash in the treatment of SRT for singular brain metastases
The Radiation Oncology department is currently examining the role of a form of treatment known as Hypofractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy (HF-SRT) for the treatment of brain metastases. Led by Erin Johns and the radiation therapy team, this treatment combines highly precise radiation therapy and fewer doses of treatment to tumours that have spread to the brain. This research utilises predictive radiation therapy planning models to deliver high quality cancer treatment by reducing the dose of radiation to the normal or unaffected brain. Early data is promising and further work in this area will be conducted in 2020.
Cancer Wellness initiative and research
Cancer survivors report emotional, psychological, physical and practical challenges in the years following treatment. The goal of this initiative is to promote a greater co-ordinated and person-centred care. With the support of The Queensland Collaborative for Cancer Survivorship, and a $200,000 Innovation grant from the PAH Research Foundation, the PAH is the first quaternary hospital in Queensland to bring together consumers, researchers, expert clinicians, health system executives, technology and telehealth experts, and community representatives to explore the pilot implementation of a Wellness Initiative. Several members from the Radiation Oncology Department form part of the key investigative team of this vital research.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in predicting treatment response following radiotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer patients
One of the holy grails of cancer treatment is being able to predict which patients are likely to respond to curative radiotherapy. The value of this is that it can guide the clinician to how intensive the treatment needs to be. In her award-winning project, Eva Liu from the Physics department has performed some predictive modelling utilising the imaging characteristics of the tumour on the pre-treatment PET scans to predict which patients are likely to respond to radiotherapy and subsequently do not require additional surgery after treatment. Her pilot study has shown promise and further research is being conducted to validate her findings in a larger cohort of patients.
