2020 Research Report
I am delighted to share with you the 2020 Research Report for the Department of Radiation Oncology, Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) incorporating both Ipswich Road (ROPAIR) and Raymond Terrace (ROPART) campuses. Despite significant challenges posed by COVID this year, we have yet again produced an annual document highlighting a rich range of high quality research activity.
This year, as a department we have received AU$1.17 million in competitive research grants and registered 58 peer-reviewed publications including very high impact journals such as Cell, JAMA, Lancet Oncology and JCO.
Although travel restrictions impacted attendance at most conferences and meetings initially, 40 presentations were successfully delivered online or at subsequent socially-distanced national and international forums including ASCO, ASTRO, ESTRO, COSA and EPSM. Commitment to continued success in a number of higher research degrees is also noted with candidates involved in Honours, Masters and PhDs.
Professor Sandro Porceddu has now stepped down as Director of Research and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for the significant contributions he has made over the last 6 years in this role. Prof Porceddu is an internationally-recognised expert clinician who has helped to establish and embed a thriving multi-disciplinary research culture within our department, ultimately intended to improve outcomes for our patients. These are big shoes to fill!

Cancer Trials Unit – 2020 – A year in review
2020 – the year of COVID-19. A year fraught with uncertainty, fear, disrupted working arrangements (with staff having to work from home), lockdowns and patients’ appointments moving from face-to-face to telephone and telehealth appointments.
Certainly not conducive to any health service, least of all in the realm of clinical trials. However, despite trials being put on hold to recruitment for a period and reduced resources available, the Cancer Trials Unit – Radiation Oncology Trials continued to perform at the highest standard.
Despite all of the disruptions, 2020 trial activity was on a par with last years with a total of 124 patients being screened for potential eligibility, with 53 patients recruited (43% recruitment rate), between the two Radiation Oncology Sites of ROPART and ROPAIR.
In 2020, 3 new trials were opened to recruitment (DurVax, DASL Hi-CAP and C-POST), whilst 2 trials were closed to accrual (RTN2 and FASTRACK II). There are currently 5 studies currently in various phases of start up and we hope to have these open shortly.
As highlighted in last year’s report as we move to more SBRT trials and ROPART’s new technology, the focus moving forward for the Trials Unit is a closer collaboration between the two radiation oncology campuses to ensure we develop strategies to maximise our resources (working smarter). The work being developed is looking at how we complete site feasibilities, start-up activities and appropriate trial selection.
So, in summary, despite a year of disruption and uncertainty, the CTU Radiation Oncology Trials team (which encompasses the trial coordinators, nurses, Radiation Oncologists, Radiation therapists and all other personnel who contribute to the conduct of these trials) have demonstrated resilience, patience and professionalism to continue to deliver the stellar service for which we are renowned.
And as always, it is with gratitude that I acknowledge all patients – past, present and future – who volunteer to participate and as a result contribute to the evolution of cancer therapy.
