2021 Research Report

 

I am delighted to share with you the 2021 Research Report for the Department of Radiation Oncology, Princess Alexandra Hospital Ipswich Road (ROPAIR) Campus. 

During 2021 there have been at least 20 trials open and available to suitable participants at ROPAIR, with additional studies closed to accrual but continuing in follow-up phases. It is important to acknowledge the 317 people who have graciously agreed to participate on these studies and the hard work of staff from the Cancer Trials Unit who have made this possible.

 
 

This year, investigators from our department were awarded AU$ 2.02 million in competitive research grant funding including NHMRC and ACRF. I would also like to acknowledge generous support received from PA Research Foundation, Metro South Health Study Education and Research Trust and our donors.

We recorded 36 peer-reviewed publications and, although travel restrictions continued to impact attendance at many conferences and meetings, 50 presentations were delivered at a range of national and international forums including TROG, ASMIRT, RANZCR, EPSM and COSA.

Several individuals continue to work towards higher degrees. I would like to congratulate Ryan Motley (Physicist, ROPAIR) who successfully completed his Master’s thesis at QUT looking at ‘Automatic detection and tracking of marker seeds implanted in patients undergoing prostate cancer radiotherapy using artificial intelligence’.

I would also like to recognise Dr Mihir Shanker (Garry Reichart Fellow) who received the 2021 Varian Prize at the RANZCR ASM for his work on stereotactic liver radiotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma and the 2021 Young Investigator Award at the COGNO annual meeting for his research into melanoma brain metastases. 

As we head into a third year of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, it is invigorating to reflect upon these significant contributions and achievements. All at ROPAIR should be proud of the continued person-centred research, technological innovation and quality service development we have been able to deliver over the past 12 months despite the obvious challenges.

Cancer Trials Unit – 2021 – A year in review 

When looking at raw numbers, one could argue that it was a ‘quieter’ year in the Radiation Oncology clinical research space. Across the two Radiation Oncology campuses, 34 new patients were recruited to trials this year from 101 patient screened, compared to 53 (124 patients screened) last year. However, what the numbers do not reflect is the increasing complexities of cancer trials. Patients’ treatments are no longer “one-dimensional” but rather involve multiple teams, treatment modalities and imaging protocols.

One such trial, which opened this year, is LiverMap which evaluates liver function using PET and MRI for patients with Liver Cancer undergoing surgery or Stereotactic Radiation Therapy.

Other trials such as DURVAX, which successfully completed recruitment this year, are embracing vaccine therapies in conjunction with immunotherapy, and are engaging with genetic and cellular researchers to investigate immune responses. Gone are the days of high recruiting trials with “basic” scientific research questions. Every trial these days has an added layer of intricacy to try and find or discover that “golden nugget” which will improve treatment outcomes and survival for our patients. 

 

During our “quiet” year, five new studies opened at the ROPAIR campus in 2021 whilst ROPART opened 2 new studies. Two studies closed to recruitment, two studies have recruitment on hold and two studies closed to follow-up during the year. Three studies are in currently in the final process of regulatory approvals and will be opened early 2022, whilst 3 other studies are in the feasibility stages. Across the two campuses, 720 patients are on or have been on studies during the year. 

The Clinical Trials team continues to grow to meet the needs of the expanding research environment fostered by PAH, now having 5 coordinators and one clinical trials assistant, supported by the Clinical Trials RT QA team.
