A Guide to Radiation Therapy Masks

If you are having radiation therapy to the head, neck or upper chest a personalised mask may be required for your treatment. This mask is made when you attend your CT Planning appointment at our centre.

The following video provides details about why this mask is required, how it’s made and what it feels like to wear.

Preparing for Your CT Planning and Mask Making Appointment

When you attend your CT planning session there are some basic things that you can do to help make the mask making process run smoothly.

  • Please avoid wearing earrings, necklaces or any jewellery that is situated in the head and neck area.
  • Try to wear comfortable loose fitting clothing that can be easily removed (particularly around the chest area).
  • It is recommended that facial hair should be shaved (using an electric razor) prior to the CT planning / mask making appointment. This will help ensure a better mask fit over the course of your treatment.
  • If you feel anxious about having a mask made or suffer from claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) please speak to one of our our Oncology Nurses prior to your planning appointment or Occupational Therapists about management strategies.
