Skylight project brings sunshine into radiation treatment room

In response to our PA Research Foundation Giving Day campaign to improve the aesthetics of our radiation treatment rooms, the PA Radiation Oncology Department was fortunate enough to receive direct support from medical equipment supplier “Gamma Gurus”. As a result of their generosity the PA Radiation Oncology Department has just finished installing a Sky Factory™ illuminated ceiling tile array.

Radiation therapy is usually administered by a machine called a Linear Accelerator, that is housed in a concrete bunker. When a patient enters this bunker to have their treatment, the size of the machine and the windowless environment often promotes a feeling of anxiety.

The introduction of this panoramic ceiling lighting gives the appearance of an aperture to a sunny blue tree lined sky, promoting a more calm and natural atmosphere for patients and staff alike.

The end result is a more visually engaging environment that provides a welcome distraction from radiation treatment. Indeed the response to the skylights has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments that “the room feels less confined” and that “the weather is always fine on PA2”.

On behalf of the PA Radiation Oncology Department we extend a big thank you to the team at “Gamma Gurus” and PA Research Foundation for helping us improve the patient experience here at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Radiation Oncology Department.
