Radiation Therapy Treatment
Radiation therapists will deliver your treatment using a linear accelerator that produces it’s radiation using electricity. During the session, you’ll typically lie down on a treatment table and the machine delivers radiation to the targeted area of the body. Treatment sessions are typically short, lasting approximately 30 minutes, and you may receive multiple sessions over the course of several weeks.
Making an appointment
Planning Appointments:
If you and your doctor decide to go ahead with radiation therapy, someone will call you to book in your planning appointment. At that time, they will give you any other information that you will need to prepare for that appointment.
Treatment Appointments:
After your planning appointment, someone will call you to book in your treatment appointments.
ROPART is open for treatment from 07:50 to 08:30 pm.
You will be asked what time would be best for your treatment appointments. Your appointment times will change from day-to-day. Please give us at least a 5-hour window of time for your appointments to be booked in.
We will do our best to fit your appointments into the time you have given us, but we cannot promise that they will always be met.
The daytime appointments fill up quickly with priority patients.
If you can come in the evenings, please let the appointment scheduler know when they call you.
Preparing for Radiation Treatment
To get ready for your radiation treatment, your doctor may have requested that you take additional steps, which will vary based on the type and location of your treatment.
On the day of your appointment, you may be provided with a gown to change into, and it could be beneficial to wear loose-fitting clothing for your comfort.
What to expect
Your treatment will take place in one of our specialized treatment bunkers, each of which contains a bed, a linear accelerator, and various equipment.
The bed will be prepared with the same equipment used during your planning day and will help you stay still during treatment. Once our radiation therapists have positioned you carefully, it is crucial that you remain still and follow their breathing instructions.
While you undergo radiation treatment, you will be alone in the room. However, please be assured that our radiation therapists are nearby and can communicate with you via cameras installed in each room, allowing them to monitor your progress or return to the room if needed.
To ensure that you are in the perfect position, our radiation therapists may use x-rays, which may take a few minutes to check. Once treatment begins, the linear accelerator will move and emit some noise. The machine can target the treatment area from various directions, but you will not feel the radiation. Although the radiation delivery only takes a few minutes, your session may last up to 30 minutes.
